In the path of the Dominguez-Escalante Expedition of 1776 and the laying of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad in 1891, Dolores was established in 1893.  The Rio Grande Southern Hotel was erected to serve railroad sojourners seeking rest on their journey from Durango to Ridgway.  Dolores is home to the iconic Galloping Goose No. 5, which transported passengers, mail, and freight along the RGS from 1931 to 1951.   The Goose continues to operate excursions on mountain railroads in Colorado and New Mexico and attracts visitors from around the world to Dolores.
